After a nationwide search, Dr. Timothy E. Fulop has been appointed Averett University’s new vice president for academic affairs and student success, effective July 1.

Fulop is dean of the faculty and senior vice president for academic affairs at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, Pa.

He brings 23 years of experience to the top academic leadership position at Averett as both a highly accomplished administrator and distinguished professor.

“I couldn’t be more delighted that Dr. Fulop is joining Averett University in this key post at this exciting juncture in Averett’s history,” said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. “We sought a gifted leader with demonstrated experience in expanding and strengthening both traditional undergraduate programs and adult degree programs; in faculty development; and in effectively promoting engaged learning and student success.

“In Dr. Fulop, we have found all of these qualities as well as someone with a strong collegial manner along with exceptional academic credentials who approaches the vocation with humor, energy and imagination,” Franks said.

Over 110 candidates from colleges and universities across America applied for the position.

Fulop earned doctorate and master’s degrees from Princeton University, a divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wheaton College.

He began his career in higher education as a religion professor — teaching first at Drew University, then at Princeton and next at Harvard.

In 1995, he was appointed assistant dean of faculty, director of institutional research, and lecturer in the history of Christianity at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga.

Prior to joining the administration at Mount Aloysius in 2011, he served as dean of the college, vice president for academic affairs and professor of religion at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.

“I was very much attracted to Averett because of its mission to provide a transformative experience for individual students in a community that puts the highest value on quality teaching, the success of students, service, and positive change in society and in the lives of students,” said Fulop.

“I am excited about the rich heritage of Averett University, and also the forward-looking vision and energy of a school with a vigorous strategic plan. With its excellent leadership team and outstanding faculty, Averett is poised to be a model of the best 21st century higher education has to offer in Virginia and beyond. I am honored to join the Averett community during a time of such exciting positive momentum.”

Fulop has published articles, essays and book reviews in a wide array of scholarly journals, including Harvard Theological Review, The Journal of American History, Journal of Church and State, Fides et Historia and The Journal of Religious History.

He is co-editor of the book “African American Religion: Interpretive Essays in History and Culture.”

He is a nationally recognized speaker and presenter on subjects ranging from “Strengthening the Liberal Arts and Professional Programs,” “Ecumenical Dialogue and Conflict in the Gilded Age,” “Uplifting the Race: One Hundred Years of Women’s Religious Organizations,” and “How to Determine if Retirement Incentives Are Working.”

He has been interviewed on National Public Radio’s popular newscast, “All Things Considered,” and he has served as an academic reference for newspaper articles in The New York Times, The Atlanta Constitution-Journal, The Boston Phoenix, and several Associated Press articles.

He has also served as a board member of the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce in Liberty, Mo. and as a member of the Bristol TN/VA Rotary International. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Church History and the American Academy of Religion.

Fulop was born in Yokohama, Japan, to missionary educator parents.
