Abertay University has appointed Professor Gavin Reid as the new Head of the Dundee Business School. He will start work at Abertay on a part-time basis next month and take up the role full-time in August.
Professor Reid is currently Honorary Professor of Economics in the School of Economics and Finance at St Andrews University, and also Professor of Enterprise and Innovation at UWS Business School – a part-time strategic role as a research capacity builder. He is also a Visiting Professor in Accounting and Finance at Strathclyde University, a Member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal, and an advisor to the Centre for Business Research, Judge Business School, Cambridge University.
Gavin Reid was born in Glasgow and educated at: Aberdeen University (MA Economic Science; First Class Honours, Stephen Scholar); Southampton (MSc Economic Theory and Econometrics; SSRC Scholar) and Edinburgh (PhD Industrial Organisation). His 42-year career has been almost equally divided between the universities of Edinburgh (1971-91) and St Andrews (1991- present). He has also held visiting professorships in the USA, Canada and France, and has been a Visiting Scholar at Darwin College, Cambridge University. From 1991- 2013 he was Founder/Director of the Centre for Research into Industry, Enterprise, Finance and the Firm (CRIEFF) of the School of Economics and Finance at St Andrews University. His research and teaching interests are inter-disciplinary, and lie at the boundaries of accounting, business, management, economics, law and finance. His university service record is diverse, involving all key operational areas (e.g. teaching, research, administration, finance, outreach and knowledge exchange) at a senior level.
Professor Reid has held many public leadership positions, including President of: the Scottish Economic Society, the National Conference of University Professors, and the Institute of Contemporary Scotland. He has chaired several research networks (e.g. the ESRC Network of Industrial Economists; the ESRC Seminars in Accounting, Finance and Economics, and the Research Forum, Scottish Institute for Enterprise, SIE).
Professor Reid’s long and distinguished research record encompasses ten research-based books, mainly on industrial organisation, and over seventy research papers in the leading academic journals in economics, accounting and finance, and he has been very active in grants, projects, and knowledge exchange. Many of his books have been re-issued in paperback and e-book formats, including (with Routledge): The Foundations of Small Business Enterprise, Venture Capital Investment, and (co-authored) Risk Appraisal and Venture Capital in High Technology New Ventures. He holds an honorary DBA from Abertay University for his research in business economics, and a DLitt from Aberdeen University for his research in small business enterprise. He also writes and publishes poetry.
