Abertay appoints new Head of Science, Engineering and Technology

University of Abertay Dundee

Abertay University has appointed Professor Carl Schaschke as Head of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Professor Schaschke is currently Head of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, a post he has held since 2006.  He will take up his new role at Abertay in the summer.

Professor Schaschke graduated first-class BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering in 1985 while working for British Nuclear Fuels, and achieved his PhD in 1990 from the University of Strathclyde while lecturing at Napier Polytechnic (now Edinburgh Napier University).  He then joined Strathclyde University as a lecturer, subsequently promoted to senior lecturer (2001), Reader (2006) and Professor (2009).  He has won a Teaching Excellence Award from Strathclyde’s Students’ Association in three consecutive years (2011-2013).

Professor Schaschke’s principal area of research is high pressure technology and processing, focussing on the influence of extreme pressure on pressure-sensitive materials in terms of product and process development such as mineral oils and biodiesels.  He has published widely and is on the Editorial Board for two international journals.  He is author of the Dictionary of Chemical Engineering which was recently published by Oxford University Press.  He was elected Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineering in 2005 and is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Abertay’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Seaton, said:  “Carl has a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research, as well as a record of personal achievement in both these areas.  I know he will make a substantial contribution to Abertay’s success in the years ahead, and I’m very pleased to welcome him to the Abertay community.”
