Four California universities among world’s top 10, survey says

University of California system

California universities once again scored highly in an annual ranking based on the reputation of world research universities by the Times Higher Education magazine of Great Britain, with Stanford, UC Berkeley, Caltech and UCLA in the top 10, officials announced.

Harvard topped the list, followed by MIT, Stanford, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, UC Berkeley, Princeton, Yale, Caltech and UCLA in the publication’s “World Reputation Rankings.” The evaluations are based on a survey of more than 11,500 senior academics.

Other California schools in the top 100 were UC San Francisco, 32; UC San Diego, 40; UC Davis in the general grouping between 51 and 60; and UC Santa Barbara and USC in the group between 61 and 70.

These rankings are based on the opinions of professors and other scholars rather than more objective measures such as research funding.

The British magazine also does a more in-depth annual study using such criteria as funding and research productivity. In that evaluation released in October, Caltech was ranked the top research university in the world for the third year in a row. Harvard University was tied for second with Britain’s University of Oxford, followed by Stanford, MIT, Princeton, the University of Cambridge, UC Berkeley, the University of Chicago, Imperial College London, Yale and UCLA.
