Cambridge University is lagging behind Oxford in the latest global rankings – but is still rated Britain’s best university by UK academics and businesses.
The institution is also facing increasingly stiffer competition from universities in the USA and Asia in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) disciplines.
But, for students planning on careers in areas such as geography, history, English and modern languages should look at studying at Cambridge, which is considered, alongside Oxford, the best in the world for these subjects.
The figures from the latest annual QS World University Rankings by subject show that Oxford is more highly regarded in more subjects by academics and employers on an international scale than Cambridge, which was ranked first globally in one subject – history
But, according to UK opinions alone Cambridge outperformed Oxford, ranking first nationally in 14 subject areas, while Oxford was top in 10.
Ben Sowter, QS head of research, said: “The UK remains second only to the US, but it now faces far stiffer competition in the STEM disciplines.
“The leading Asian institutions can now be considered serious global players, particularly in the fields of science and technology.” (Cambridge News)
