Views from a key road into Cambridge will be transformed by a £13 million extension to Cambridge University’s engineering department.

Planning permission has been granted for the five-storey extension to the Baker Building in Fen Causeway, on the site of part of the Royal Cambridge Hotel’s car park.

A university report said the project would provide additional room for expanding research activity, and address the current lack of space to support existing study.

There were no objections to the application.

In a report, John Evans, a council planning officer, said: “The proposed new building will make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the conservation area and the setting of the adjacent listed Royal Cambridge Hotel.”

Four trees will have to be removed along Fen Causeway but they will be replaced with semi-mature specimens.
