Academic institutions now among city’s major employers, new study finds
Universities in Birmingham are now employing more than 10,000 people, making the sector one of the most significant in the city.
Latest figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency showed that employment at Birmingham’s universities is booming, with the three major institutions – Aston University, Birmingham City University and the University of Birmingham – all increasing staff numbers in 2012.
The University of Birmingham is the biggest university employer in the city, with 6,320 staff, a 3.6 per cent increase on 2011. Birmingham City University recorded 2,440 members of staff, a 2.6 per cent increase, and Aston University had 1,665, a 0.8 per cent increase.
Nationally there were 382,515 staff employed in the higher education sector, an increase of 1.1 per cent.
