Ballarat’s two universities have passed with flying colours, scoring high marks in the latest tertiary education resource guide.

The University of Ballarat has been awarded the maximum rating of five stars for teaching quality for the fifth year in a row in the 2014 Good Universities Guide to Universities, TAFEs and Higher Education Providers 2014.

The Australian Catholic University (ACU) scored a four-star rating in three categories – getting a job, positive graduate outcomes and graduate starting salary.

The University of Ballarat was also awarded four stars for each of the following – overall satisfaction, retention rating, socio-economic equity, proportion of TAFE and proportion of school leavers.

Three stars were awarded for positive outcomes and cultural diversity.

University of Ballarat deputy vice-chancellor (learning and quality) Todd Walker said they were delighted with the continually strong ratings in The Good Universities Guide.

“We are the only Victorian university to have scored five stars for teaching quality five years in a row,” Professor Walker said.

“The five stars means graduates rated the teaching quality of their courses at UB higher than graduates in similar fields from 80 per cent of other institutions.”

The Good Universities Guide bills itself as an independent resource which provides independent five-star performance ratings, comparing all undergraduate degrees and institutions against one another.

The rankings are based on student-relevant criteria, such as entry requirements and course cut-off scores.

ACU vice-chancellor Greg Craven said he was proud of ACU’s achievements in training and graduating students who were workplace ready.

“ACU’s strong showing in the Good University’s Guide is an endorsement of the work our students do during classes and practicums,” Professor Craven said.

“(It) gives them the tools and skills to immediately join the workforce.”

Professor Craven said ACU’s core curriculum and emphasis on social justice were also highlighted in The Good Universities Guide.
