The Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC) says it has so far found at least 12 bogus universities operating in Thailand.
OHEC’s campaign against illegal schools came after the World Peace University’s illicit operation was exposed in the media a few weeks ago.
Deputy Education Minister Sermsak Pongpanich said bogus universities fall in two categories.
The first involves foreign universities which open branches in Thailand but fail to observe local law. The second involves schools set up locally under the names of popular overseas universities which then earn money by issuing honorary degrees to customers.
Alleged unauthorised universities listed by OHEC include Adamson University; International Academy of Management and Economics; California Yuin University; Victoria University; Rochville University; Lacrosse University; Spicer Memorial College; Islamic University of South Africa; Intercultural Open University; Dhammakaya Open University; Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama; and Institut Francais de la Mode.
Mr Sermsak said any academic certificates issued by these schools are invalid.
