Jim Knight, the Manager of Recreation and Athletics for Portage College, will take over the head coaching duties for the Voyageurs Men’s Hockey team next season. The former Assistant Coach has been busy recruiting new talent and is excited to bring some big names to Lac La Biche.
“I’m really excited to get things going this year. We have a good mix of returning players and some new recruits that we’re excited about,” he said.
Headlining the new recruits is forward Kyle Threndyle, who turned down several Division III offers in the United States to play for the Voyageurs this season.
Joining him will be big blueline defenseman Zane Morin, who was drafted by the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL, along with Spencer Samuel and Jesse Linner who both scored over 100 points in their Junior A careers.
New forward Connor Lowe-Wylde who has played over 100 games at the Junior A level and defensemen Jordan Stimpson, Cole Horn and Justin Cote who all have Junior A experience, will also be joining the team. New goalie Dustin Hyde from Bonnyville will serve as the team’s backup goaltender. Hyde had 10 shutouts and a career Goals Against Average of 2.31 at the Junior B level.
“We have some really talented players coming to Lac La Biche this year and we’re looking forward to playing competitive hockey and getting home-ice advantage in the playoffs,” Knight said.
A few familiar faces will also be returning to campus this year as defensemen Ryan Hill and Giiwedin Kakegabon and forward Brent Wilson who played with the Voyageurs a few seasons ago will help bring veteran leadership to the team.
Returning from last season’s team are Ty Brueggeman, Ryan Anderson, Rylan McKinnon, Ryan Lobreau, Jesse Hall, Jory Geddes, Dustin Popowich and starting goaltender Kirby Halcrow.
