Students pledge a Green life style after the Successful completion of BUiD’s Triple ‘S’ event held under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum
The British University in Dubai’s (BUiD) Sustainability Summer School (SSS) concluded successfully on the afternoon of 27th June. Guests of Honor from Government organizations at the closing ceremony were HE Sana Suhail, Asst. Undersecretary, Support Services, Ministry of Public Works and Engineer Abdullah Rafee, Assistant Director-Engineering & Planning Department, Dubai Municipality,. HE Sana Suhail addressed the BUiD SSS participants and said that it’s nice to see the youth participate with full fervor in this Sustainability training week and asked them to work towards a greener and sustainable UAE and support it in its sustainable initiatives.
Engineer Abdullah Rafee, congratulated BUiD SSS attendees for the successful completion of the Sustainability Summer School and achieving so much in just a week. He also spoke about Dubai Municipality’s commitment towards sustainability as part of its Dubai 2015 strategic plan. VIPs, students and visitors from outside toured an exhibition of students’ work that was displayed at the BUiD SSS exhibition.
BUiD SSS participants were divided into six teams and each team designed a piece of furniture using recyclable material and also the learnings from the SSS week.
Prof Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice-Chancellor of The British University in Dubai was closely following up on the progress of the students and encouraging them to make the best use of this opportunity. The event was a huge success; Mr Anthony Peter, Director for Brand Marketing and Communications of Panasonic Middle East who also attended the event was impressed with the display of student work and expressed his satisfaction in partnering with BUiD’s triple ‘S’ event as the Main Sponsor.
The BUiD SSS 2013 event received registrations from 48 Undergraduate and Postgraduate students from 15 universities from within and outside the UAE. BUiD’s Sustainability Summer School,was held at BUiD from 23rd June to 27th June. All students attended academic lectures, presentations from Industry professionals, talks by experts and took part in debates with their counterparts. Dr Hanan Taleb, Atkins Assistant Professor for MSc Sustainable Design of Built Environment programme, mentioned that BUiD worked with a SSS organizing committee, which mainly consisted of students from last year’s BUiD SSS 2012 event and that they lined up stimulating activities, competitions and interactive field trips to sustainability landmarks in the U.A.E. These landmarks included Masdar City, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), RTA-Dubai Metro and the LEED – Platinum Pacific Control’s building.
Prof Abdullah Alshamsi along with the VIPs presented mementos to all the BUiD sponsors for partnering on the Triple S event. These included Panasonic Middle East as the main sponsor, Emax – support sponsor, Akhtaboot-online recruitment partner and DIAC student hub – Education Partner. All the participants, organizers and people who supported the event also received certificates of participation. Prof Alshamsi said, “This year’s BUiD SSS event was bigger and better than last years and we will continue to enhance the quality of the programme and also offer more places for students to attend next year.”
Ms Noha Jaheen, Leader of the BUiD SSS event who played a major role in the success of BUiD SSS this year and last year, said “ I am very happy with the registrations we received for the event this year and all the support we received from BUiD and sponsors. This was my last year at BUiD before I graduated and I wanted to put my best foot forward in improving the quality of the SSS event in terms of content, activities and student engagement initiatives for the BUiD SSS event and wanted to put up a bigger show than last year on sustainability for the student community and try and build leaders under me who will take this project forward with Dr Hanan Taleb of BUiD”.
Ali Khalid, Team Leader of Purple team believes that each participant gained two major lessons in this event, the first is that sustainability does work and – responds to our daily life’ needs and can improve our lifestyle, the second lessons is that now they have the capability to step in their leaders shoes and play a role in sustainability, have an impact on their peers’ lives and most probably even change it for the best.
The purple team also won an award for fabricating the most sustainable piece of furniture. His teams’ project was optimization of the food court tables used in malls and other public places, the idea came as they were searching for a solution that can be applied on a mass produced product and that can enhance its environmental, economical and social criteria.
All the participants shared very positive feedback on the BUiD SSS event and felt part of the Green community wanting to contribute to its success and awareness at every stage in their life. A lot of thank you and notes of appreciation messages came on BUiD’s social media pages and through other channels.
