New PhD in Architecture and Sustainable Environment will train UAE’s human capital buttressing two key pillars in recent Arab world Competitiveness Report 2013
Professionals from Government and Private Sector attended the official launch of The British University in Dubai (BUiD) accredited PhD in Architecture and Sustainable Environment in academic association with Cardiff University.
This is the third Doctoral programme BUiD has launched in the last 3 years and BUiD is now accepting applications for a September 2013 start.
BUiD was the first university in the region to gauge the need for doctoral programmes in the UAE, and in 2009 successfully launched the regions 1st its first cohort of three EdD students will be graduating at this year’s Graduation Ceremony to be held next Wednesday, 12th June.
The official launch of BUiD’s new accredited Doctoral programme was hosted by the Ministry of Public Works. Eng. Fareed Al Katheery – Director of Maintenance Department at the Ministry of Public Works who gave an opening speech at the event, said, “I would like to congratulate BUiD on the successful launch of BUiD’s PhD programme in Architecture and Sustainable Environment, it supports the long-term national initiative to build a Green Economy under the slogan “green economy for sustainable development”.
H.E.Dr Abdulla BilHaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Public Works has extended great support to The British University in Dubai since BUiD signed a Memorandum of Understanding two years back with an aim to support research-based education in the UAE.
Prof Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice-Chancellor of The British University expressed his sincere thanks to His Excellency for his support including sponsorship of six employees from the Ministry of Public Works on to BUiD’s Master Programmes.
He said, “BUiD’s launch of the Ph D in Architecture and Sustainable Environment is one of the small steps in building UAE competitiveness through ensuring the right training and a skilled workforce in the UAE, both listed as key factors in efficiency enhancement for overall UAE competitiveness”.
He believes by providing the right programmes to the decision makers and policy advisers of both Government and private institutions BUiD is empowering young and mid-career professionals to think, analyze and make informed decisions for the design and development of robust and effective policies for UAE’s sustainable future.”
The launch event also provided a platform for both Government officials and professionals to learn about the UAE’s Green Economy strategy and sustainable issues for the region on the World Environment Day. Eng Fatima Al Habshi from Ministry of Environment and Water gave a very detailed and informative presentation on UAE Green Growth and emphasized how Government plans will strengthen human capital and local experience as key steps for the Ministry of Environment and Water in its work to implement UAE’s Green Growth Strategy.
Mr Adnan Sharafi, Emirates Green Building Council, Chairman also presented at the event on the topic Energy demand reduction in existing buildings. Prof Bassam Abu Hijleh, BUiD Dean and Atkins Chair of Faculty of Engineering and IT provided background as to how the world has come to recognize that Sustainability not only requires care and protection of the environment but also ensure needs to be economically and socially acceptable, giving rise to the concept of the triple-bottom-line in which proposed solutions must be environmentally sound, economically viable and socially acceptable.
The Founders and partners of BUiD recognized the importance of sustainability from its establishment in the early years of the millennium. The Environmental Design of Buildings MSc programme was introduced in 2005 and was the 1st of its kind in the region. With time the programme has recognized the need for a holistic approach to sustainability and was revised and refined to become the Sustainable Design of the Built Environment (SDBE) MSc programme covering a wider range of relevant issues such as urban planning, landscape, indoor environment, energy resources and building services in addition to building design and construction.
Built Environment programme, said “BUiD’s MSc SDBE programme has attracted around 150 students to date from the UAE, the GCC and further away including Brazil, Canada, Nigeria and Thailand all looking for a unique and progressive programme. It was devised based on collaboration between Academia and Industry. That is with the collaboration of Cardiff University-Wales, a worldleading UK research rated university, and Atkins UAE, a leading engineering consultancy and strong advocate of sustainability. This collaboration between Academia and Industry continues with strength which has now resulted in the new Architecture and Sustainable Built Environment (ASBE) PhD programme, again a unique programme which is also the first of its kind in the region.”
At the launch event BUiD also recognized Atkins strong support for its Sustainable Design Built Environment programmes having provided professorial and research funding as well as offering some 48 scholarships since 2005.Mr Joe Tabet, Design Director at Atkins Global spoke on behalf of Atkins and few of the Atkins Scholars presented their learning and research work to the audience.
BUiD will continue to launch new Doctoral and Masters Programmes to align with the Nation’s workforce needs and foster stronger relationships with government and private sector.
