PhD Studentship at Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, UCL

University College London, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering is offering PhD studentship under EPSRC Industrial CASE award with BBC R&D: 2013-2017. The fully-funded 4-year PhD studentship covers a tax-free stipend of £15,590 (increasing with inflation), an industrial top-up of up to £3k per year, books, professional memberships and travel to workshops and conferences, as well as tuition fees at a home/EU rate. This PhD programme is focused on the need to quantify the fundamental capacity limits for the nonlinear channels carried over optical fibers, and to develop techniques to approach those limits so as to maximize the achievable channel capacity for the optical network. The studentship will start from September 2013.

About Scholarship: The aim of the research is to understand the achievable information capacity limits of optical communication systems. In contrast to wireless communication channel or optical channels in free space, the optical channel in fibre is nonlinear. This PhD programme is focused on the need to quantify the fundamental capacity limits for the nonlinear channels carried over optical fibres, and to develop techniques to approach those limits so as to maximize the achievable channel capacity for the optical network. The challenge is to understand to what degree optical nonlinearity can also be compensated or, indeed, used, to unlock the fibre capacity, maximize both the information transmission rate and the total bandwidth. The successful applicants will be part of the Optical Networks Group, Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and will be supervised by Polina Bayvel ONG-UCL in collaboration with Peter Moss, BBC R&D.

Study: This PhD studentship will base on Digital signal processing for high-speed optical communication systems: maximizing the nonlinear channel capacity.
