UCSD ranks in top research universities worldwide

Besides UCSB, University of California campuses at Berkeley, San Francisco and Santa Cruz were ranked within the top 11.

University of California San Diego is the 15th best research university in the world based on scientific impact and collaboration, according to rankings issued by Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Leiden’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies measured 500 major universities worldwide.

“It’s an honor to receive this global ranking which is testament UC San Diego’s preeminence as an academic powerhouse,” said Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. “As a leading research university, we are an agent of change that helps to spur innovation and economic growth that address local, national and global challenges.”

The Leiden Ranking 2013 is based on publications in Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science, between 2008 and 2011. According to the CWTS, the ranking used a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators covering biomedical and health sciences, life and earth sciences, mathematics and computer science, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities.

Of the top 25 universities, 22 are in the U.S. The list was led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, Princeton and Harvard.
