Canadian University of Dubai is offering students the chance to win places on its most popular summer courses. At the three-day GETEX higher education exhibition this week, the university will give away places to winners of a new competition that emphasizes non-verbal communication.
The Win Without Words competition forms part of the university’s commitment to providing educational opportunities to the community.
One student that visits the university’s stand during GETEX will have an opportunity to win a free summer course in their preferred major program. Another student will win a free summer course on the Communication Program. A third prize of free administration fees and a course book can also be won.
Win Without Words was developed by current Canadian University of Dubai Students and Communications Chair Dr Franziska Apprich to highlight the art of non-verbal communication.
Visitors to the stand compete for the prizes by acting out statements written on three cards, all of which are associated with non-verbal communication. Each student is filmed and the winners chosen by a Canadian University of Dubai panel.
“There are many forms of communication and this is aimed at bringing non-verbal communication to the forefront of students’ minds,” said Dr Apprich. “In this age of mobile phones, body language is often overlooked.”
Dr Apprich said, “Non-verbal communication is oldest of form of communication and it will be interesting to see what the students do and how creative they can be.”
She said, “Most non-verbal communication is subconscious, but there are times when you have to explain yourself to others and you have to point and gesture to be understood, particularly when you are speaking to someone who doesn’t speak the same language.”
She added, “At Canadian University of Dubai we have students from over 80 countries. Each country and culture has its own gestures and it is fascinating to see the students interacting in this way.”
GETEX is the region’s biggest exhibition for higher education. It takes place at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre from 17th – 19th April, 2013.
