Slovak universities have not been successful in their attempts to make it to the world university elite. The two best universities in the country, Comenius University and the Slovak Technical University, both in Bratislava, placed among the first top thousand according to Webometrics this year, while last year they belonged among the top 500, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on February 11.

Comenius University (UK) ranked 658th and the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (STU) is 719th.

“It is difficult to comment on the shifts in rankings since the criteria change every year,” said spokesperson for STU Andrea Hajdúchová, as quoted by Hospodárske Noviny, adding that the placement also depends on the number of visits to the university’s website.

Rector of the school Robert Redhammer praised the results STU gained in two categories: the hyperlinks to the information on external websites and the publishing of results of their research.

Webometrics evaluates 12,000 education facilities all around the world based on the activities on the internet, like the visibility of the school’s website, the volume of the website’s content and the number of hyperlinks to this content.

When it comes to the other countries in the central European region, all of them placed better than Slovakia. The Czech Republic has eight schools in the top 1,000, of which three are listed among the top 500. Poland has seven schools, Austria four schools and Hungary two schools in the top 500, Hospodárske Noviny wrote.
