Nottingham Trent University students scoop young designers award

imageTwo product design students at Nottingham Trent University have won a national design competition and been named Vauxhall Young Designers of the Year.

The competition, run by Vauxhall, was setup to generate furniture designs for the car manufacturer’s new ‘Green Room’, which the company says will promote its values of forward thinking and sustainability.

Harneel Heer (left) and Maggie Ip (right) met Vauxhall’s director of communications Denis Chick on 4 February at the company’s headquarters in Luton.

Harneel won the award for ‘Best Table’ while Maggie won the category of ‘Best Chair’. Both winners also received cheques for £100 and a pair of tickets to the England vs Brazil football friendly at Wembley Stadium.

The two students, who are both in their second year of study, were then given a tour of the Luton plant where they had an insight into how important manufacturing considerations are to the design process, and the efficiencies of mass-production.

Matthew Watkins, a senior lecturer in product design at the university’s School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, who teaches the students, said: “The university is very proud of Maggie and Harneel’s achievements and we believe they have bright futures ahead of them.”
