During his two terms as secretary-general of the United Nations (1997-2006), Kofi Annan undertook a variety of diplomatic initiatives. An advocate for human rights, development, and peace, he revitalized the United Nations, bringing it closer to the public by forging ties with civil society, the private sector, and other partners.
