RMIT University has appointed two distinguished scholars from The Netherlands and England as its first Professors of Design.
Professor Gerda Gemser from Delft University is the inaugural Professor of Design, Business, and Professor Sarah Pink from Loughborough University is the first Professor of Design, Media Ethnography.
They will be joined in 2013 by Professors of Design in the disciplines of aerospace, mechanical and manufacturing engineering; electrical and computer engineering; and architecture and design.
RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, said: “These global leaders in design will bring their expertise to a variety of areas, from engineering to architecture and creative media as well as an emerging discipline for design – business.
“These five professorial appointments in design cement RMIT’s position as a global leader in technology and design and enhance Victoria’s international reputation as a centre of design excellence.”
Professor Gemser is a recognised researcher within the field of design and innovation management in the creative industries.
She has published in highly regarded management and design journals such as Organization Science, Organization Studies, Journal of Management Journal of Product Innovation Management, Design Studies and International Journal of Design. Professor Pink’s research combines theoretical and methodological scholarship with applied practice.
She works across themes including digital media, energy, consumption, everyday life, sustainability, activism, tacit and sensory ways of knowing, safety and health and the construction industry. She researches across urban, domestic and workplace environments.
Her work is often developed through interdisciplinary collaborations across design, engineering and arts disciplines, to which she brings social and cultural research expertise. She is a global authority on visual and sensory ethnography methodologies and continues to develop this field in new ways relating to digital technologies.
