* Agreement envisages scientific research cooperation, setting up of scientific research cooperation platforms
* Sichuan University to provide three scholarships to AIOU
The Sichuan University, one of the top-ranking Chinese educational institutions, and Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) signed an agreement to promote bilateral cooperation in the field of higher education through steps such as exchange of students and faculty members.
The agreement was formally signed in the Chinese city of Chengdu and was witnessed by AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi and the Sichuan University’s Vice President Prof Yan Shijing. According to a message received on Wednesday, the academic exchange agreement between the two universities is the first-ever of its kind for sharing knowledge and experience in the field of higher education.
It is also the first time that China has entered into mutual collaboration with any foreign country for promoting education through distance-learning system. “Based on equality and mutual benefit, after friendly consultations, the Sichuan University of People’s Republic of China and the AIOU have agreed upon on a number of steps to promote academic exchanges between each other,” the communication stated.
The accord envisages exchanges of teachers and researchers for teaching and scientific research, and exchanges of students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies. It also provides for scientific research cooperation in fields of common interest, establishment of scientific research cooperation platforms, exchange of journals and academic works and other programmes regarded appropriate for exchange by both sides.
In order to implement this agreement, the administrative departments for international cooperation and exchange of the two universities will make routine contacts and the two universities will work out implementation details for specific exchange programmes and supervise the process and exchange programmes with consultation.
It was decided that, if necessary, the two sides would make modifications and supplementations to the present agreement with mutual consultations. Issues not specified in the agreement will be solved through talks between the two sides. This pact will be valid for five years and can be extended or terminated by either side with a written notice six months prior to the date of expiration.
AIOU Vice Chancellor Dr Sangi has appointed Faculty of Social Sciences Dean Prof Dr Rashid A Naeem to coordinate with the partner university for the implementation of the agreement. The Sichuan University’s Vice President Prof Yan Shijing and Dr Sangi termed the agreement a landmark arrangement between the two universities that would bring the two countries closer in the field of education.
During the talks on the occasion, it was agreed that the Sichuan University will soon send a faculty member to AIOU to teach Chinese language. Besides, the university will also provide three scholarships to AIOU to train its faculty members in the fields of energy and mining.
