VMU will host the official opening events of Vytautas Magnus University North America, the university’s new office, which will be based in Washington, DC, USA, on 27 September. VMU is the first higher education school in Lithuania to open an office in North America.
Established in 1922, Vytautas Magnus University is considered to be the most liberal and modern university in Lithuania. It is the first to open an office in North America. The creation of this VMU branch will help advance the university mission of fostering intellectual sophistication and civic consciousness in its students by collaborating with universities from all over the world.
According to VMU Rector Prof. Zigmas Lydeka, the opening of this international office in North America is a historic step for the university and the entire country. “The goal of this office is to not only spread the word about VMU, but also encourage Lithuanians living in America to stay up to date with the scientific and educational achievements of their home country”, the rector explained.
Those who re-established VMU crafted an academic vision, which specifically incorporated the key Western values of democracy, openness, and tolerance. The university’s goals have served to unite a number of prominent Diaspora academics and intellectuals, including Prof. Algirdas Avižienis and Prof. Bronius Vaškelis (the first VMU rectors after re-establishment), President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus (Chair of VMU Council), and many others. Inspired by the university’s mission, they have worked for the development of higher education, democracy and international research in Lithuania.
One of the main goals of Vytautas Magnus University North America (VMU NA) is to foster international growth and establish partnerships with the most prominent schools, universities and other educational and cultural programs in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In addition, the already established VMU Development Foundation (US) will work alongside VMU NA to create privately funded student scholarships and long-term alumni programs.
VMU Music Academy has already established a partnership with the world-famous academy of performing arts, Juilliard. Adam Meyer, Associate Dean for Administration at the Juilliard School, will join the VMU NA opening ceremony. The relationship between these two renowned institutions will make it possible for future exchanges of both professors and students.
