A memorandum of understanding has been signed between University College Cork and the University of Maryland, signalling a formal partnership agreement which will provide for a wide range of educational and research activities.

The relationship was formalised during a visit to UCC over the last few days by a delegation from the US, led by secretary of state of Maryland John McDonough.

The accord was signed by UCC president Dr Michael Murphy and the vice-president and chief research officer at the University of Maryland Prof Pat O’Shea, a UCC physics graduate.

The delegation visited the Mardyke Arena, where they were treated to a demonstration of hockey and soccer by UCC students, and were invited to view hurling skills by UCC’s GAA development officer, John Grainger.
