The number of higher education institutions in Russia will be reduced by 20% in the next three years, Russia’s Education and Science Minister Dmitry Livanov said.

He added that the Ministry would assess the efficiency of higher education institutions in recent years before starting the reorganization.

Now there are 1156 higher education institutions in Russia excluding affiliates.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the Ministry to define ineffective state-financed colleges and universities by the end of this year and to work out a program of their reorganization by May 2013.
