According to a report released, Purdue is ranked 56th among 500 top universities based on six indicators. It was 61st last year. Two years ago it was 69th.
In specialty rankings compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Purdue is Purdue ranks 10th in engineering, 19th in chemistry, 20th in computer science and 47th in overall science.
The rankings are based on the number of alumni and staff members winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index — Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.
Other Big Ten universities ranked in the top 100 Academic Ranking of World Universities included University of Wisconsin, 19th; University of Michigan, 22nd; University of Illinois, 25th; University of Minnesota, 29th; Northwestern University, 30th; Penn State University, 49th; Ohio State University, 65th; Indiana University, 84th; and Michigan State University, 96th.
