Japan: Universities tie on doctor training

Fukushima Medical University

Fukushima Medical University will start an exchange program with Hiroshima and Nagasaki universities to train doctors, Shinichi Kikuchi, president of the Fukushima University.

The program comes after the three universities signed a trilateral partnership agreement in April 2011 to cooperate over the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. The exchange program is expected to start as early as this fiscal year.

Speaking at a meeting with the presidents of the two partner universities, Kikuchi said he was grateful for their support.

Toshimasa Asahara, president of Hiroshima University, expressed willingness to continue supporting the Fukushima University. His school “will contribute with its long-held experience and technologies,” Asahara said.

Nagasaki University President Shigeru Katamine said, “I hope young doctors sent from this university will help invigorate the medical community in Fukushima.”
