Missouri Universities Considering Tuition Hike

It could get a lot more expensive to attend a school in the University of Missouri system next year, as the cash-strapped universities face a new round of state budget cuts.

According to a proposal release, in-state tuition at the Columbia campus would rise by 7.5 percent, in St. Louis it would raise by 8.2 percent and at Rolla the tuition would rise by 9 percent. UMKC students would be looking at the lowest increase in the system, at just 3 percent.

The schools would also increase tuition for out-of-state students and graduate students. The proposed tuition hike comes after Gov. Jay Nixon proposed a 12.5 percent cut in state funding for higher education. If the cuts are approved, the system will have seen their funding cut by a total of 25 percent in the past three years.
