National University Singapore (NUS) have announced the new Future Leaders Programme at NUS Career Fair 2012. Aimed at outstanding students, the programme seeks to hone undergraduates’ potential in leadership principles and experiential learning, as well as giving back to the community.
Delivering his speech at the opening ceremony, NUS Vice Provost (Student Life) Prof Tan Tai Yong said: “The Future-Ready Programme will be tailored and customised to the students from the different faculties and will be driven by the Career Advisors dedicated to the respective faculties. We welcome collaborations with interested employers, recruiters and alumni, who have the relevant industry experience and practical knowledge to partake in this programme.”
An annual event, this year’s Career Fair attracted a record 176 participating employers. There are 54 first-timer participants, including Charles & Keith Group of Companies, Coca-Cola Singapore Beverages, Garena, Google, Nomura Securities and Towers Watson.
With more than 7,000 students expected at the Fair held over two days, Prof Tan encouraged them to be proactive in researching and seeking job opportunities early. He also urged them to be open to the various job options while staying true to pursuing their dream career that best align with their passion and strengths.
The Future Leaders Programme is part of a three-tiered Talent Development Programme by the NUS Career Centre. At the broad-based level, the general NUS student population can benefit from career preparation throughout their studies. For students interested in a global career, they can turn to the Global Talent Programme with initiatives such as the Singapore Business Federation-NUS Global Internship and Mentorship Programme.
Mr Hen Yi Xuan, a first-year student, was part of the pilot Future Leaders Programme last semester. He said the programme has made him more aware of his strengths and weaknesses, and moulded him to be a more all-rounded leader ready to take on greater challenges. He worked on a project titled “Love Through Lenses”, where his team generated awareness on the importance of inter-generational family bonding via a community photography exhibition.
