The Nanyang Technological University of Singapore (NTU) is launching its own scholars programme this year to equip selected students with inter-disciplinary knowledge, research opportunities and to allow them interaction with renowned scientists.
NTU provost Professor Freddy Boey said the University Scholars Programme was not set up to compete with local universitites but to encourage top students to study in Singapore instead of going overseas.
The programme will start with its first intake of 50 students in the coming 2012 academic year and will recruit students via invitation.
Students, admitted to the programme based on merit, will be allowed select their own major discipline. They will also be eligible for a selected range of electives. The National University of Singapore set up its own University Scholars Programme in 2000.
