Education panel to study Hong Kong university model

The committee looking into providing more university places for Singaporeans is visiting Hong Kong on Tuesday and Wednesday to study the higher education system there.

Minister of State for Education Lawrence Wong leads the delegation, which will visit several tertiary institutions including the Open University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Mr Wong, who will be accompanied by committee members and officials from the Education Ministry, will also meet the senior officials from the territory’s Education Bureau, which is responsible for setting its education policies.

The 15-member university committee, which includes industry chiefs and heads of universities and polytechnics, was set up following Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s announcement in August last year that more degree opportunities will be provided for Singaporeans.
